Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A MONGST the stands which are of 21.outstanding interest to the purchaser of vehicles for overseas service or for employment in districts where unmade roads are the rule, the VickersArmstrongs exhibits are unique.

The Carden-Loyd tractor-lorry, which can carry 30 cwt. and haul a similar burden in a trailer, is a commercial development of well-known military machines. The engine, gearbox and lateral transmission are arranged in the reverse order to the conventional; the power unit is situated in the off side of the punt-type body. The driving sprockets are well above ground level, so that they are insulated from shocks ; steering is by means of inter-connected brakes and clutches, one set controlling each of the two main sprockets. Support for the vehicle consists of two tnbular cross-members, on each end of which is a sprung rocking frame.

An even more remarkable model is the Vickers-Artnstrongs cross-country lorry, designed to carry 64 tons and to haul a trailer bearing another 3.i tons. The front axle carries two half-tracks, and the steering is by hydraulic braking.

The drive from the 80 b.h.p. air-cooled engine passes through a five-speed gearbox to the articulated tracks.

The life of the tracks is stilted to be in the neighbourhood of 2,000 miles to 3,000 miles. Swamp shoes can be employed to reduce the pressure on the grqund to 6 lb. per sq. in.—VickersArinstrongs, Ltd., Vickers House, Broadway, London, SAVA.
