Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

JJITHERTO the Studebaker Pierce.Arrow chassis sold in this country have been of 80-cwt. or 2-ton payload capacity. The new models have been given an increased sphere of activity by amending the design so as to give permissible burdens of 2 tons and 24 tons.

In the case of the 2i-ton models, one is shown as a chassis whilst the other model includes a tipping body with hydraulic operating mechanism. In the case of the former, the wheelbase is 13 ft. 4 ins, and the 7-in, frame carries a six-cylindered engine developing .70 b.h.p. It will be appreciated that this gives an adequate reserve of power for all conditions. The crankshaft is carried in four bearings and drives through a double dry-plate clutch to the unitmounted four-speed gearbox, thence by

an open propeller shaft to a spiral-bevel rear axle. Cable-operated self-energizing four-wheel brakes are specified and, as a result of a road test, we can vouch for their efficiency.

In addition to the ordinary semielliptic springs for the rear axle, auxil iary springs come into action when exceptionally bad going is encountered, or a temporary overload has to be carried.

In the case of the other 2i-toreler, the wheelbase is 12 ft. 4 ins, to make it more suitable for tipping work. The body is steel lined and, as shown, the vehicle is listed at £510.

The 2-ton model, which has a 13-ft. 4-in, wheelbase, has a similar engine and frame also of 7 ins, depth, which is rather greater than is usual for a vehicle of this capacity: therefore, its durability should be ensured. This chassis costs £298, but, as exhibited with a special Luton van, the cost is 1435.

Concerning the bodywork, it is in, teresting to note that the Luton-type van has provision for side loading.— Studebaker Distributors, Ltd., 385, Euston Road, London, N.W.1.
