Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Drive Shaft, Axle

(IN this stand there is a battery-elecki tric truck which has a load capacity in the neighbourhood of 36 cwt. It has a low-level platform and the drive ie taken to the larger wheels. With an Edison battery this truck sells at £585; with a lead battery it costs £487.

Amongst the petrol-engined industrial machines is a 4038-type Slingsby-Brett of the high-platform type. Its load capacity is 14 ton ; the load-carrying wheels revolve upon the dead axle, whilst the front wheel takes the drive ; by means of the rotating carrier in D42 which this wheel is housed directional control is provided.

A two-cylindered horizontally opposed air-cooled engine is used. This is mounted in a longitudinal position and drives by chain to the gearbox below it. The next stage is from the driving shaft of the gearbox to a sprocket mounted beside the front wheel. This front wheel is mounted on pivoted arms with helical load and recoil springs. The wheel carrier, which is of the rollerbearing type, moves in the channelsection turntable forming the front of the vehicle. The 4038 type has an overall length of 8 ft. 6 ins, and a platform length of 5 ft. It retails at £122.

Model 4043 has a somewhat similar specification, but it is of the elevatingplatform variety and can carry a similar pay-load. This machine is, of course, used in conjunction with stillages on which the load is mounted ; after backing the truck under the stillage the platform is elevated to 16-1 ins, and the vehicle is then ready to move off. The price is £145.

Finally, there is a trailer which costs £21. It is provided with a quickacting coupling and is a useful appliance in the factory.—H. C. Slingsby, 89, Kingswav London, W.C.2.
