Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

:URRENT PRESSURES on hauliers to accept traffic at on-economic rates and without parity with the pace of fflation must lead inevitably to substantial rate rises later. urthermore, many operators might find themselves unable to ieet massive inflation linked wage demands later if their usinesses were forced to operate unprofitably.

This warning was spelt out by IHA National Vice Chairman, :tn Rogers, speaking at the nstitute of Traffic Administraion Dinner at Southampton last >aturday.

"Operators can only charge what their market will bear, pperators can only pay what heir businesses can afford,he aid. "It is a fact that costs in iaulage have been rising very apidly but operator's ability to ecover those costs from cuspmers has been reducing. This queezing of margins reduces profitability and will lead to a Dta I loss of working profit in evere cases.'" Mr Rogers also referred to ie RHA's role in the security eld: he called for more secure iff-street. overnight lorry parks, mphasised the increasing need 3 r thorough scrutiny of new taff members, and warned bout the trade euphemism caltd shrinkage.

Referring to the likely effects f the TUC's Day of Action lanned for May 14. "My pecific anxiety and one peculiar 3 our industry,'" he said relates to drivers who, because

of failing to work on that Wednesday, effectively blight their operation and their colleagues' operation for two or three days at best or the whole of the week at worst."

Mr Rogers said it was 'a distressing fact that the TUC's Day of Action — more appropriately Day of Inaction — on Wednesday May 14 was likely to disrupt every part of the economy. It is to my mind suicidal for an economy struggling as we are to be • further prejudiced by gratuitous delays. disruption and interference of this kind. There are many aspects of this overall problem and many anxieties about this particular day but I would like to draw attention to one particular matter. Transport is basic to every other industry and disruption of the transport networks will prevent people who wish to work from so working."
