A CHANGE in the law about tyre tread depth is possible.

Mr Kenneth Clarke, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, said in the Commons last week that the reference to three-quarters of the breadth of the tread caused difficulty in some cases, and he had received and was considering representations in favour of, and some opposing, a change in this provisions.

The National Tyre Distributors' Association had represented that the imm minimum tread depth should be applied to the whole of the width of the tyre, not merely three-quarters.

However, other bodies, including the AA and the RAC, had urged that this would not be justified.
