A FTER long negotiations, an agree

ment was signed last week by Leyland Motors Ltd. and Hotchkiss Brandt S.A., of France, covering the marketing of Leyland Group vehicles in France and certain French-speaking territories. Under the agreement, a new jointly owned company—Hotchkiss Leyland S.A.—has been formed and apart from the marketing of Leyland, Albion and Scammell vehicles the company will assemble, manufacture some parts and service them.

A similar agreement has also been concluded enabling Hotchkiss Leyland S.A. to market in France vehicles produced by the Leyland associated company of Brossel Freres S.A. in Belgium. And a further clause provides for the sale and service of Hotchkiss Brandt products through the export network of the Leyland Motors Group.

In addition to armaments and military vehicles, Hotchkiss Brandt manufactures fourand six-cylinder diesel engines of 90 to 120 b.h.p., which are said to be complementary to the range of diesels produced by Leyland. The smaller unit will be the main Hotchkiss product sold through Leyland outlets whilst an important section of the agreement concerns the possible marketing of vehicle components and units to French manufacturers.

Mr. Donald G. Stokes, managing director of Leyland, said when the agreement was signed that about 25 per cent of the Group's exports went to Europe and it was planned to double this in the next three years.

Atkinson Drive in N.Z.

AA BID to capture a larger share of the New Zealand market for quality heavy-duty lorries and buses is to be made by Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., which has set up a new company, Atkinson Vehicles (New Zealand) Ltd. Mr. H. H. Mathews is managing director and Mr. B. F. Caunt, managing director of the British company, is on the board.

Mr. Caunt, who recently returned from New Zealand, said the new company incorporated Diesel Specialists (Johnsonville) Ltd., which had helped to prepare the ground for this new sates drive. Subagents are to be appointed throughout New Zealand.

Extending Trailer for British Market AU.K. subsidiary is to be formed by Herbert Vidal and Co. of Hamburg to handle sales of its Vidal-Duplico trailer which can extend its sides to double its effective floor space. The subsidiary will be under the management of Peter J. Garrini and Associates Ltd., 120 High Street, Edgware, Middx. and the Duplico will be manufactured using the chassis of a British vehicle maker.

The Vidal-Duplico is available in three forms: as a complete vehicle; as a semitrailer; and as a fouror six-wheeled independent trailer.
