FACED with an estimated loss of between £12,000 and £13,000, Yarmouth Town Council decided last week to apply to the Eastern Traffic Commissioners to make the embrgency. fare increases permanent. Next Monday, Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., will bring into force new fare schedules. The Scottish Traffic Commissioners have refused permission to the company to increase fares on a wide scale. A minimum single fare of 20. has been refused and the figure remains at 2d. The Commissioners have declined to permit an increase of Id. in single fares of 6d. and over, and, instead, have authorized an advance of id. on fares between 61d. and 81d., and ld. over 9d. Fares will remain much as at present, although there will be some reductions, particularly in return fares. The Commissioners' decision will reduce the amount sought by the company by about £200,000 a year. United Automobile Services, Ltd., have been granted a new fares structure by the Northern Traffic Commissioners. Fares up to 43d. will be increased by id., from 5d. to 2s. by Id., and above 2s. by 2d. U.A.S. applied for the increases in February, but the case was adjourned. In approving the application, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, chairman, said thatthe company's costs had increased by £179,000 a year, including £83,000 for wages and £70,000 for fuel. If the new fares yielded too much revenue the company would be asked to revise them.
