HAVING learnt that bus services which were withdrawn because of fuel shortage were not to be restored, Fifeshire Roads Committee have decided to object before the Scottish Traffic Commissioners when the operators' applications to modify their licences are heard. Proposals which W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd., arc to make have been studied by the committee. The Fife area manager of the company has stated that services which would be kept in abeyance would be those for which there was no public demand.
A spokesman for Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., has said that after some services were restored last month they were cancelled because of lack of demand by the public.
NO RELIEF FOR SECURITY
ECAIJSE it is a legal requirement that lorries should be equipped so that their loads can be properly secured, it would not be proper to give tax relief for compliance. This was stated by Mr. J. Enoch Powell, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, last week, when Mr. A. Kershaw (Cons., Stroud) asked whether, for the purposes of taxation, the extra weight involved in protecting drivers from the dangers of shifting loads by providing adequate fittings could be disregarded. Mr. Kershaw said that there was a danger of a load coming through the cab if a lorry stopped suddenly, and drivers were chary of using their brakes hard for this reason.
