justin.stanton@rbi.co.uk REGISTRATIONS OF trucks weighing 6-tonnes or more continue to climb, with the SMMT reporting that registrations were up 64.2% in February and 71.4% for the year to date.

The total for February was 1,780, up from 1,084 in February 2010, while the year-to-date total was 3,916, up from 2,285.

In February, the top six suppliers posted market shares of 10% or more: DAF was top with 18.8%, followed by Mercedes-Benz (16.2%), MAN (15.9%), Volvo (13.4%), Scania (11%), and Renault (10.3%). Iveco was seventh with 6.9%.

Crucially, the top seven all increased their volumes year-on-year, Volvo and MAN especially so: up 256% and 158% respectively. For the year to date, DAF leads Mercedes by less than a percentage point: 20.8% against 20.2%.

Registrations of three-axle tractors were up 384.8% in February, rigids were up 8.4%, but two-axle tractors were down 26.5%. In the year to date, rigids were down 4.2%, two-axle tractors up 155.1%, and three-axle tractors up 283.7%.

Year-to-date igures for vans of up to 3.5-tonnes have risen 37.7%, with Ford continuing to lead the way, registering 7,826 vans in the irst two months of the year, up by 56% on 2010, and increasing its market share by 3.3% to 27.7%.

Vauxhall follows with 4,435 registrations this year, up 30%, with Volkswagen in third place with 3,034 units, up 69.1% on the irst two months of 2010.

February saw registrations rise 23.8% to 11,113, compared with the same month in 2010.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt says: “We are now seeing a sustainable improvement in new vehicle demand. The Budget later this month [23 March] will be critical in strengthening consumer and business conidence.”
