CUSTOMERS ARE having to come to terms with the fact that used tractor units are being offered with far higher mileages than would have been seen on a vehicle of equivalent age a few years ago.

Mike Smith of Widnes independent dealership Smith Brothers explains: "Hauliers are working their trucks harder so they may be covering up to 50% more kilometres annually They're mostly motorway rather than local delivery miles though, so they usually suffer very little additional damage.

"Few of the three to four-year-old units that we see have done less than 400,000500,000km," he says.

Many hauliers still shy away from them, however, despite the fact that today's trucks, if well maintained. are far more capable of recording big mileages without suffering ill effects than their predecessors. 'It's not easy to get people into high-mileage motors, but it all depends on what you class as high mileage," says Derek Lowis, used truck salesman at Hampshire Daf dealership Adams Morey.

"Frankly 500,000km isn't a lot on a threeyear-old tractor these days. Something that had recorded 800,000km,however, would be a lot more difficult to sell."
