Drivers, like all other employees, are given a stock option to allow them to share in the company's financial gains. This, according to Knight, is one of the keys to the company's success: "When you feel and act like an owner, things tend to get done with more focus and intensity. It's so important that everyone feels like they are part of a team, whether or not their surname is Knight. This company is not a kingdom, it's a democracy."
Drivers who joined the stock option scheme from the start made a shrewd decision —the value has increased nine-fold in the past 10 years.
Schemes like this have helped Knight Transportation deal with the driver shortage, which is even more acute in the US than in the UK. 'Nobody in this industry can get enough drivers," says Knight, "although we get more than most!'
