Tipper operators keen to add a Mercedes to their fleets are to get another option with the launch of a 32-tonne Axor eight-legger.

MERCEDES IS ADDING a 32tonne eight-legger to itsAxor lineup of in-line-engined heavies.

Its Brazilian-made 12-litre 0M457LA engine, manual gearbox and narrow cab will replicate those of the big-selling Axor tractors Aimed principally at aggregates work, it will be at least 200kg lighter than the company's V6-powered large-cabbed Actros 8x4.

The new model will target the UK market, but the timing of its introduction remains uncertain.

Mercedes' marketing team would like to see it type approved and launched before the 1 October Euro-4 compliance deadline for new vehicle types'. Any delay would force the Axor 8x4 to meet Euro-4, with Mercedes' SCR deN0x equipment forcing up its price and jeopardising its attractive tare weight.

However, the company is understood to be lobbying for three or four months' derogation from the Euro-4 deadline for the new model; an additional reason being that a January or February 2006 launch would allow the Axor eight-wheeler to incorporate new.lighter.DaimlerChrysler driving axles which will only then become available.

These axles will potentially reduce the Axor's unladen weight by a further 100kg, bringing the chassis-cab tare weight down to the unofficial industry benchmark for 8x4 tippers of nine tonnes. This would give the new Mere a payload potential to match that of key rivals from Volvo, Scania and Dat
