Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Steve Banner • Four Renault Magnum tractors with lowered fifth wheels are going into service with Myers Group of Purfleet, Essex. The conversions were handled by Arcade of Enfield, North London which delivered all four vehicles within two weeks.

The Magnums are all 420ti 19TD 4x2s with B18 gearboxes; they will be used on groupage work, hauling mega trailers for 11.-Ac of Zeebrugge.

Arcade used its Diagnostica workshop computer to reduce the ride height by 40rnm and fitted a fixed Fontaine fifth wheel with only a 12mm gusset plate separating it from the chassis to achieve a fifth-wheel height of 1,105mm while retaining a conventional chassis. The standard 22.5in wheels are shod with 315.70R295 low-profile tyres, and Arcade general manager Alan Hunt says: "Sourcing them was our biggest problem. We spent six hours ringing round to locate them; some are Pirellis and some are Bridgestones.

To check that the conversion was effective Myers Group managing director Brian Myers drove the first Magnum over to Belgium and coupled it to an IFAC semi-trailer. "There was no problem at all," he says.

Until now Myers Group's fleet of 35 was exclusively Iveco Ford: EuroTech and 220.36 TEC tractors. "Iveco could not supply what we wanted," says Myers, "but Renault responded immediately. We needed the vehicles fast because of the new contract we had taken on." A Magnum demonstrator had impressed Myers by returning almost 8mpg.
