Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• British hauliers of all sizes have no confidence in the Channel Tunnel and will not be using it, according to an independent survey by MORI for Scania.

More than 100 senior transport executives were questioned in January. Only 20% said they would be willing to use the tunnel if it was more expensive— which it will be, by an average 10%, according to operator Eurotunnel.

Although the company says it has a firm commitment from 500 hauliers to use the tunnel, Scania's survey says that 70% see no competitive advantage in using it and 64% know little or nothing about it.

Other findings are:

• 26°..0 say the tunnel will have a positive effect on their business.

• 44% feel the industry needs the tunnel.

• 4% had decided to use the tunnel by January.

• 39% think the tunnel will be a financial disaster.

• 25% think, wrongly, that drivers can stay in their trucks for the crossing.

• 64% admit knowing little or nothing about the tunnel.

Of the 102 executives questioned by MORI, 82 were British and 20 French—the size of companies ranged from five truck fleets 10 500.
