Important Conference Discusses Problems of the Private-party Operator ACONFERENCE to discuss contract work was held at Winchester, last Friday, by the Southern Traffic Commissioners, with Major-General Sir Reginald Ford in the chair. Those present included representatives of numerous operators and of the railway companies.

The Commissioners considered that all private-hire work, except that properly classified as contract business, could fie carried out under a licence, and they felt that operators must wish to have the position regularized. Stage and ex B42 press-service operators would not be harmed by such an arrangement.

On behalf of several concerns, Mr. Mackenzie intimated that they would welcome a certain amount of control of contract work, but they thought the Commissioners would recognize that contract work proper could be undertaken without a special licence. It was suggested that operators carrying out contract work should be granted a modified form of the existing excursion, end tour licence. A scheme for the control of contract operation was produced

by the Commissioners. .

Sir Reginald Ford defined advertising in a public-house as consisting of a written announcement, but a private verbal statement of an intention to run a coach trip would not be regarded as advertising.
