Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

New Trolley-bus Motor.

Rotherham Corporation's transport manager has carried out tests with a new design of motor for use in trolleybuses. He states that there was a reduction in consumption of electricity of .31 unit per mile. If the whole fleet of trolley-buses were converted to the use of this type of motor, there would he a saving of £1,000 a year in the cost of electricity.

In accordance with his suggestion, 22 trolley-buses are to be converted to use the new type of motor, the cost being approximately £140 per vehicle.

New Seale of Fire-brigade Charges.

The fire-brigade committee of Pontefract Corporation has amended the scale of charges for attendance of the brigade at 'fires outside the borough, to bring them into line with the schedule recommended by the National Fire Brigades Association and the Royal Commission on Fire Brigades and Fire Prevention, as follows : The above charges cover fuel cost, cleaning and all other expenses inci dental to the use of the appliances and sustenance allowances for men and all other out-of-pocket expenses. The turnout fee in every case is chargeable only if the machines and their crews actually leave the station, and includes the time occupied in travelling to and from the fire. If the call should be cancelled before the departure of the appliance, the charge will be the same as if for standing by at a fire for an hour or less.

"North Circular" Gyratory System.

To avoid confusion, Middlesex County Council, on the suggestion of the Ministry of Transport, is to provide a gym tary traffic junction on the North Circular Road at the intersection of Cambridge Road and Hedge Lane, Edmonton, at a cost of £5,376.

Rates for Municipal Haulage.

• The highways committee of Dewsbury Corporation has accepted the tender of Messrs. Brooke Bros. for the hire, for six months, of a 3-ton tipping lorry and extra maii at 5s. 3d. per hour ; 3-ton tipper at 4s. an hour: 30-cwt. tipper at 3s. 2d. per hour, and 1-ton tipping lorry at 3s. an hour,

The Latest Dennis Handyman.

Hitherto the Dennis 550-gallon multipurpose gully emptier, which is popularly known as the Dennis Handyman, has been constructed so as to perform gully emptying, cesspool emptying. street sprinkling, gutter flushing and sewer flushing, in sonic cases a tipping body being Provided to interchange with the tank.

A prominent feature of the latest example to be de livered is the addition of the special washing heads produced by Dennis Brothers, Ltd, these being incorporated, to meet the requirements of the cleansing department of Keighley. The main layout of the system adopted in this type of machine has been retained, that is to say, a rotary air pump is used for creating pressure and Taellum in the tank for the gully-emptying operations, whilst a centrifugal pump housed below the cab, supplies the pressure required for washing.

The washing heads are controlled, both for flow and direction of delivery, from the driver's cab, whilst 'the angle at which the water is thrown on to the road is arranged so that splashing is negligible, as is clearly shown in an accompanying picture.

More Money for Road Maintenance?

The highways committee of Northants County Council reports that, whilst a reduction in expenditure may be a paramount consideration under existing financial conditions, it is satisfied that it will be necessary to ask the county council to increase the amount to be provided in subsequent years, if the roads are to be placed and maintained in a state fit to carry the weight and volume of traffic now passing over them.

Tenders for Liverpool Haulage.

Successful tenderers for the motor haulage, at day rates, of Liverpool Corporation's health committee, which is the authority responsible for road and general engineering works in the city, are as follow :—Frederick I. Ashcroft, Peter Balmer and Sous, F. L. Kirk and Co., Leeee Motors, John Mason, Charles A. Mortis, James Stansfield, Vincent Stansfield and Walter Spencer (all of Liverpool).

These tenders recently came before the city council for approval.
