Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN January last we announced that the DOSMO Safebeam headlamp was now marketed in a form suitable for commercial vehicles. We are now able to publish a more detailed description of the device.

As can be seen from the accompanying illustration, the lens has a series of fine vertical flutes formed on its surface at the centre, and these, in conjunction with double prisms situated on each side, deflect the light to right and left. The beam is prevented from rising above the level of the lamp by the conical reflector which is superimposed upon the front portion of the upper half of the main reflector. The special Safebeam bulb is used which has a looped filament, giving a point source of light.

As a result of this design, the sides of the road are well illuminated at night, whilst the effective centre rays of the beam are not impaired. The elimination of those rays which normally rise above the horizontal and perform no useful purpose, results in the prevention of dazzle to the driver of an approaching vehicle and improved penetration, when foggy conditions obtain, through there being no light to be reflected back by the fog particles into the driver's eyes.

We learn from a reliable authority that with a 7i-in. lamp a speed of about 45 m.p.h. is possible with comparative safety and without eye strain or fatigue. The advantages not only of having no switches or controls to manipulate when encountering an approaching vehicle, but also of being able to keep one's own lamps on when travelling against a stream of traffic without disregarding the courtesies of the road, are self-evident.

Desmo ,Safebeam lamps with strong steel casings and substantial lugs for mounting on forked-type brackets are marketed by Desmo, Ltd., Stafford Street, Birmingham, at retail prices ranging from 12 10s. upwards, according to the model.
