Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANOTHER model of the Republic range has been introduced into this country ; it is the Al chassis for 30-cwt. loads and is sold by Republic Motor Trucks Sales and Service, Ltd., Peterborough Road, London, S.W.6. As in the case of other types of this make, it is robustly built and the power-to

weight ratio is remarkable 63 b.h.p. for a chassis weighing 27 cwt.

With an 11-ft. wheelbase the cost is £285 in chassis form ; a 12-ft. model is also available. The former will carry an 8-ft. body and turn in a 45i-ft. circle. Semi-elliptic springs are used to support the 6-in. frame. Behind the engine-gearbox unit there are three cross-members, the centre one carrying the steady bearing of the propeller shaft. On the off-side frame member is carritql a 12-gallon fuel tank ; petrol is fed to the carburetter by a vacuum tank.

Unit, construction is adopted for the six-cylindered engine and four-forwardspeed gearbox. The cylinder barrels and upper part of the crankcase are cast monobIoe; a single detachable head is used. The bore and stroke are 3'ins: and 41 ins, respectively, giving a displacement of 201.5 cubic ins. At 2,900 r.p.m. the output is 63 b.h.p. Pressure lubrication is, of course, employed, the sump holding six quarts of oil. Above the cylinder head is the semi-automatically controlled ignition

distributor. -The coil is mounted in a dry position on the rear face of the dash, being protected by the scuttle ; adjacent is the lighting fuse. On the off side,. and driven in tandem with the /into:Lite dynamo, is the centrifugal water pump ; its gland is accessibly placed. A. single-plate Borg and Beck clutch takes the drive to the gearbox, which gives ratios of 1.745, 3.18 and 6.16 to 1• on the forward indirect ratios. The ratio of the rear axle is 5.86 to 1 •as standard, but 6.2 to 1 is optional. Final drive is by bevels, the half shafts being fully floating, and Timken bearings are used throughout. The rear axle gives a ground clearance of 10 ins.; the front axle allows 81 ins.

The pedal-operated service brake consists of an hydraulic system operating internal-expanding shoes in all four wheels. For parking or emergency purposes there is an external-contracting hand-controlled brake on the primary propeller shaft.

Standard equipment consists of 5.50in. by 20-in, low-pressure tyres for the front 'wheels and 32-in. by 6-in, highpressure tyres for the rear ; if preferred, dual low-pressure tyres may be specified, by way of an extra, for the rear wheels.
