From 15-17 June the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management exhibition and conference at Paignton will showcase the best and the newest in the industry

According to the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management, more than 300 manufacturers and service providers will participate in this year's event, CIWM 2004, and going by last year's numbers around 5000 people are likely to show up.

Despite the successes enjoyed by both the CV Show and SED recently, trade fairs are dipping in popularity; this is reflected by a number of notable absences from this year's show No Johnston Sweepers, for example.

When Dennis Eagle stayed away a couple of year's back it was a major talking point. Now it's returned to the fold.As UK market leader during 2003, Dennis Eagle has numbers to live up to, and an agenda to set. Blazing a trail in the recycling sector is the Twin Pack: at CIWM 2004 this will be shown off astride a 6x4 Elite 2 chassis complete with a Terberg triple bin lift. Unimog has been something of a chameleon over the past decade. Once upon a time, it was pitched as the ultimate off-road vehicle. Then buyers realised ultimate vehicles came with ultimate price tags, so the idea of the implement carrier was born and the Unimog was reinvented as a coat hanger for other people's attachments. No change this year; at CIWM

2004 the DaimlerChrysler subsidiary is demonstrating a range of Mulag attachments, including a dedicated washing unit for bus shelters, signs and tunnels. Mulag's parent company, Schmidt, came close to stumbling in the UK a couple of years back, and the Peterborough operation has been scaled down markedly since the dark days. Keeping its head above water demanded a loyal customer base, and this year the company is keen to celebrate the fact that after-sales service is the most highly valued

aspect of customer care at Schmidt UK. Of the metal, Schmidt's product range is represented by the Swingo compact sweeper, the SK650 truck mounted compact sweeper and the AS900 dedicated airfield runway sweeper.

The trend towards recycling has caused headaches in some quarters but recycling isn't new; Milton Keynes-based Trio has been at it since 1963. Trio is the sole UK agent for Telehoist skiploaders, hook-loaders, recycling vehicles and refuse collectors. Additionally, the company is

active in spot and long-term rental, operating the country's largest specialist fleet of skiploaders, hook-loaders, recyclers and refuse collection vehicles. The idea of renting is one of the key shifts within the waste management business. Twenty years ago, if you wanted one you bought one. Nowadays you lease or you contract hire. short of a truck you go out and hire one. Now, with over 10 years in the business, Northamptonbased SFS can lay claim to a spot near the top of the municipal contract-hire table and, once again it will be parading its wares at Paignton.

The past decade has seen a lot of changes, as MD Bob Sweetland points out:"Customers' needs have changed dramatically over the past 10 years. Typically, staff in the public

sector did not tend to move around too much and therefore had an extensive knowledge of their particular area. Over the years this has changed and we find that SFS is often called upon to provide a much more consultative approach to projects." TransLinc has also targeted local authority business of late, and is making its third appearance at Paignton this year.TransLinc had a good year in terms of local authority business in 2003, but 2004 looks set to top this.lhe firm is reporting an increase in its customer base,

particularly with neighbouring local authorities.ltansLinc is keen to develop working partnerships because they benefit both the local authorities and the customers they serve.

What else? It would be a brave visitor who didn't take a stroll across the space hired by either Mercedes-Benz or Scania, two companies who have been busy in the municipal market of late.

It's always worth dropping by Seddon Atkinson's stand – it has done much to set the agenda in terms of municipal specs.'This year that policy brings an extra bonus, with parent company Iveco sharing space with the Oldham-based manufacturer.

Similarly, Isuzu, a company that has redefined customer service in the truck industry, is always worth a visit. This will be the first time the newly independent UK company gets to visit Paignton, and with a product range entirely appropriate to the local authority sector Isuzu should be on any truck buyer's take-a-look list.To Isuzu you can add Mitsubishi, another stalwart of the sub-7.5-tonne sector, as well as BMC. It may be a long drag to Paignton (unless you're lucky enough to live in the South-West) but if you're involved with the purchasing or operation of waste management equipment the journey is worthwhile. This is a niche business that frequently gets lost within the bigger shows. But it's a sizeable sector and, like anything else in transport, mistakes are expensive.A day on the English Riviera could save a year's worth of avoiding the accountant. •
