Down at his local, the Fax and Ferret, the Hawk has always been able to hold his own in a heated debate. So he was dead chuffed to learn that the Oxford Union, for the first time in its 176-year history, is going to hold a debate outside Oxford. The venue will be the London Motor Show at Earls Court and the motion to be debated is: "This house would force motorists to use their cars less." Blimey! That will generate some heat under some collars. Invited speakers and champion Union debaters will set-to in a recreation of the Union's debating chamber, the contents of which, including the despatch boxes originally from the Fiouse of Commons used by Churchill during WWII, will be transported to Earls Court for the debate on Wednesday 20 October, The Oxford Union boasts a roll call of the great and the good, including five British ex-prime ministers: Gladstone; Salisbury; Asquith; MacMillan and Heath. The London Motor Show will be held at Earls Court from 20-31October.
