Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Series, the older model is still doing plenty of work on the road.

Many operators like ERF's no-frills, workmanlike trucks and this approach filters through to the service routines. But maintenance mustn't be overlooked and the Perkins-engined E12 with its often neglected oil spinner is a good example. •

It is the ERF El2 that is the subject of this month's Workshop Ways. While the Tx325 has had recent problems with smoke testing, it is still the favourite engine with many operators. Indeed the 12-litre engine features prominently in the new EC range.

Our vehicle had come back off longterm demonstration with more than 200,000km on the clock for its B service. It has a Kirkstall front axle, a Rockwell rear axle and an Eaton Twin Splitter gearbox. There are three levels of service. A, B and C, with standard times of 2.7, 4.0 and 6.6 hours. An A service is carried out at 16,000km, a B service at 100,000km or six months, and a Cat 200,000km or annually.

Mick Kristenson wielded the spanners. He used to work for ERF but now works for one of its distributors, Beech's Garage. ERF has closed the service workshop in Middlewich to make way for more production and Beech's has opened a new workshop just down the mad.

Parts prices (retail ex-VAT) are: two oil filters, £40.40; spinner refill, £22.60; engine fuel filter, £15.60; and chassis fuel filter, £3.90.
