Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Iveco and Ford have won design protection on a number of items after taking their cases to appeal—but they failed to win cover on body panels.

Iveco case has been granted protection for its steering wheels, mirrors, lamps and seats. Ford won protection for its wheels and wheel trims.

However the court ruled that body panels, including the butnet and wings, were covered the "must-match" exception. A court in Italy has also decided that body panels are not protected under Italian law.

The EC is considering proposals on design protection which could alter the legal framework.
