• Hauliers and council official will meet in Southampton next week to thrash out a voluntary code of practice for HGV drivers in the city centre.

This move replaces the contt-0versial plans for a night-time lorry ban which were put forward by the council earlier this year.

Local hauliers were infuriated by the proposals and launched a protest campaign which encoraged the council to think again.

The code of practice is expected to include specific route restrictions and speed limits.

Details of local bans and weight limits are expected to be drawn up following a public inquiry later this year.
