• The German privatisation agenc, Treuhand is looking for buyers for three Berlin-based transport operations. They are part of the Auto Trans conglomerate, which is in liquidation.

Berliner Transport (BE-TRA) has 116 staff and operates 63 vehicles. It distributes hazardous goods, foodstuffs, perishable goods and frozen foods. It also has 15 franchises for inter-city transport contracts.

Berliner Spedit ion und Femtransport (BE-SPED) has 59 employees. It operates 47 Mer edes and Volvos on demestic inter-city workand has warehouse space with 41 inter-city transport franchises.

Transport und Gewerbehof (TUG) has 66 staff and 46 vehicles, mainly 1991 Mercedes-Benz tractors. It transports building materials and has 27 inter-city transport franchises.

URTU general-secretary David Higginbottom says the idea would be beneficial to drivers and clients because the union's objectives would be different to those of a commercial organisation: "We would make sure drivers receive good terms and conditions and look at assisting them back into full-time employment."

He adds that the union agency would not charge a fee if a client wanted to offer a driver a permanent job.
