• Clerical workers in Traffic Area Offices around the country staged an unofficial walkout this week in protest at Department of Transport proposals to raise the 0-licence threshold requirement to six tonnes and introduce continuous us 0-licensing.

And the Civil and Public Services Association, representing the TAO workers, is warning of the possibility of further industrial action. This week's action was spearheaded by a dispute at the Edinburgh office, where CPSA workers balloted in favour of action in response to DOT plans to transfer some of their work to the Newcastle office.

There were also spontaneous walkouts at other TAO and Driving Standards Agency offices by staff who fear for their jobs and future prospects.

The CPSA claims that raising the 0licence threshold to six tonnes and continuous 0-licensing could mean the loss of up to 70% of Traffic Area Office work leading to the closure of four offices with the loss of several hundred jobs.
