MANUFACTURERS and suppliers attended the Institute of Solid Wastes Management Conference and exhibitions of cleansing vehicles last week in Torbay.
Chrysler was the largest single exhibitor with 28 vehicles spread throughout 68 stands.
Three models on its own stand weighed 11.4 tonnes (11.2 tons) 14.7 tonnes (14.5 tons) 16.3 tonnes (16 ton) gvw. They were in the Dodge 100 series shown with refuse collection bodies from Shel yoke and Drewery Ltd for the first time.
An interesting development by Rock Forge Garage of Shrewsbury allows the Dodge four-man crew cab to be tilted hydraulically to an angle of 450 providing very good access to the engine.
A spinoff from an inquiry into the ingest. of birds by aircraft jet engines at airports has enabled David McKrill Engineering Ltd to secure an order for 11 Mac lifts and 24 garbage gorgers from the Civil Aviation Department of Saudi Arabia.
It appears that the birds are attracted to the airfields by the plentiful supply of scraps. By using an enclosed waste system, the problem is reduced dramatically.
A left-hand drive Boxer BX 1200, was among the six vehicles on show from Leyland Truck and Bus, fitted with the TG Lacre compact vacuum road cleaner, which has its own auxiliary Perkins power pack.
The vehicle's own engine the 6-98NV model rated at 81.3kW (109bhp) at 2,600rpm has a maximum torque of 355Nm (2621bft) at 1,650rpm. Maximum tolerance, to allow for unevenly distributed loads is provided by a 4.58 tonm (4.5 ton) front axle and an 8.t tonnes (8.5 ton) rear axle fi operation at a plated weight I 12.2 tonnes (12 tons) gvw.
Among the vehicles show by Ford was a refuse collect( from Eagle Engineerinl another from Glover Webl and a Johnson road sweep with dual controls so that can be driven from either le or right.
On the Vauxhall Motoi stand was the 1,778kg (35cw CF refuse vehicle now avail ble with a 3.2m (10.5ft) or 3.5: (11.6ft) wheelbase.
