THE explanation of a faulty weighbridge was accepted by magistrates at Appleby, Eden Valley when it granted conditional discharges to a haulier and driver involving an excess load of sand.

The overloading was revealed during a Ministry of Transport spot check.

Haulier Kenneth Little of Town End, Clifton, Penrith, and his driver, Ian Kelvin Graham of Milner Mount, Penrith admitted exceeding the lorry's gross weight and overloading on two sets of axles.

A letter was submitted from the owners of a quarry where the sand was loaded confirming that the weighbridge was faulty.

The court was told that Graham, a motorway niaintenance worker, had been driving as a favour for Little who had just come out of hospital.
