Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BECAUSE the Minister of Transport

. had held that existing operators had held that existing operators should be asked to fulfil any need that might exist, the North West Licensing Authority refused an application by Messrs. Great Moor Coaches, of Stockport, to operate. four coaches on tours from the town.

During the hearing at Manchester, last week, it was stated that Stockport's facilities for coach excursions were practically " non-existent " and that no coach tours or excursions had been advertised in the town for the Whitweek holiday week-end.

Mr. H. Backhouse, for the applicants, said that before the war three operators ran 12 coaches on excursions to serve the town's population of 135,200. Now, with a population of 141,300, only six vehicles were licensed for such work.

Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., Manchester Corporation, North Western Road Car Co., Ltd„ Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., Mr. H. Edwards and the Railway Executive objected.

The Licensing Authority said that if he thought there were sufficient need in the town for a relaxation of the restrictions, he would grant it.

NO STATION UNTIL R.T.E. ACTS

SOUTH Shields Corporation has been advised by the Ministry of Transport to defer its plan for a bus station in the Mile End Road area until the Road Transport Executive formulates its passenger-transport scheme for the north-east.

The corporation is to join the Federation of Municipal Transport Employers.
