Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THERE seems to be a great deal of uncertainty amongst vehicle operators and drivers as to the road mileages between particular points. In certain circumstances, the men are paid partially on a mileage basis, but frequently the figures shown on the recorders of the speedometers on their vehicles are in excess of those given in the handbooks issued by road associations, and operators will usually not pay at the higher rate.

The men concerned argue that their mileage recorders are reasonably accurate, and mileage must depend on the particular routes followed, which may not always be those upon which " textbook " mileages are based. They also ask if consideration is given to the additional length of roads resulting from the building of by-passes. It is also said that the distances given between towns vary to some extent between one authority and another. It seems, therefore, that some standard work of this kind is required; one which would be approved by both operators and drivers. This would obviate argument and reduce the possibility of friction.
