A plea for help

' know that you are already aware that my partner, John Mills, an Enfield lorry driver, has been in prison in Bulgaria now for over two years.

I am still working on his behalf to push for a fair trial and his early release, but this is proving to be a long uphill haul with little or no help from the authorities.

I have this week written a letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair in the hope that something can be done to hurry the matter along, as John is in poor health and this worries me greatly.

I enclose a copy of the letter sent to the Prime Minister as I doubt that many people understand the real conditions in these prisons and the

Dear Mr Blair, My partner, Mr John Mills left Britain in May 1995 to drive a lorry load of Ford parts to Turkey, a job he has done before with no pro bkms Unbeknown to me he was arrested, along with his driver's mate, on 7 June, accused of being aware that there was over 20kg of heroin hidden in the lorry This whole business,I feet has been mishandled from the start and is now starting to take on farcical proportions, which I am sure will continue unless our government takes the matter in hand Our previous government did nothing to h4; it just forwarded any letters to the British Embassy so lam pinning my hopes on you being able to do something to speed this business to a conclusion.

John suffers with stomach problems and is now becoming very mahwurished He was a big man, well over six feet td, but he now weighs around eight stones I am enclosing a list of the things he is given to eat so that you can see that it is certainly inadequate

I only hope that you will be able to help me to help John come home before he has to be brought home in a bat I am the only one who can fight John's case for him as his chid dren are too young They write to John telling him they miss their daddy His father is very elderly and cannot be given too much worry about his son.

I do all that is humanly possible to help John's case I write letters to the embassy and truck drivers' magazines and send him regular food parcels.

But I myself do not earn high wages so without going into too much debt! can only send a parcel every two weeks or so, although we write to each other every week and! am always glad to read that John is keeping in fairly good spirits.

He has always been good natured with a good sense of humour so that helps him to bear this, Jam sure Once again, I hope you will take tlw trouble to read this letter and not just pass it on to the British Embassy as the previous Government used to da I look forward to your reply This is an excerpt from one of John's letters: "The toilet is a hole in the ground and the shower is a pipe where cold water shoots out come snow or shine What about the food then!

"Monday: Breakfast, honeycomb "stuff"; lunch, rice and cabbage with oil dinner, linzen (this is like bird seed).

"Tuesday: Breakfast, honeycomb; lunch, rice and tomatoes in oil; dinner, potato soup.

"Wednesday: Breakfast, cheese; lunch, paprikas with ail; dinner, rice and cabbage "Thursday: Breakfast, macaroni; lunch, spam in slimy sauce; dinner, linzen.

"Friday: Breakfast, jam (les really); lunch, burger and cabbage; dinner, rice and tomatoes "Saturday: Breakfast, a bun; lunch, bean souk dinner, rice and tomatoes (again).

"Sunday: Breakfast, a bun or honeycomb; lunch bean soup; dinner, potato soup"
