RAIL, rather than CM's customary type of road transport, hardly surprisingly takes precedence in the latest edition of Scottish Transport, the periodical magazine published by the Scottish Tramway Museum Society (£1). But there is room for nostalgic glances at other modes of transport, including an article on India Tyres, to mark Dunlop's closure of its Inchinnan factory.
The factory was built on the site of a former airship factory, and was established to get around import duties which the British Government imposed on American tyres. It started to manufacture tyres in 1928, and was in Dunlop ownership before the outbreak of war. By 1959, India was making 45 types of tyre in 450 sizes, and was exported widely.
