SIR ROBERT LAWRENCE, chairman of the National Freight Consortium, has a habit of lifting stones to find out what is underneath. On a visit to North Eastern British Road Services at York he discovered that the branch used a tradesman's bicycle, complete with advertising plates attached to the frame, to deliver spare parts.
Whether this squares with the image of a great national transport organisation I am not sure, but it at least shows an Aberdonian appreciation of economy.
