SIR ROBERT LAWRENCE, chairman of the National Freight Consortium, has a habit of lifting stones to find out what is underneath. On a visit to North Eastern British Road Services at York he discovered that the branch used a tradesman's bicycle, complete with advertising plates attached to the frame, to deliver spare parts.

Sir Robert and Peter Thompson, chief executive, were on a whistlestop tour of the country to inspect progress in the commercial exploitation of NFC engineering services. It was planned by Walter Batstone, chief engineer. Its intensity suggests that his favourite piece of music is that immortal aria, None Shall Sleep.
