Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE DEPARTMENT of Transport's vehicle and component approvals division at Bristol is concerned about the lack of response from many motor caravan importers to the imminent effect of type approval.

Goods vehicle manufacturers and importers have been preparing for some time for the introduction of British national type approval (CM January 2) and remain in close consultation with the DTp's engineers at Bristol.

Several teach-ins have been held, the most recent in June (CM, June 5), in order to enable all interested parties to become familiar with how the scheme will work, but motor caravan importers have not attended.

Goods vehicle national type approval applies to goods vehicles, other than trailers, manufactured on or after October 1, 1982, and first used (nor mally first licensed) on or after April 1, 1983.

It also applies at the same dates to motor caravans, motor ambulances and to certain vehicles, known as bi-purpose vehicles, constructed for the carriage of both goods and up to eight passengers which are not included in the passenger car type approval scheme.
