Watney Mann Ltd. has appointed Mr. E. R. Gahm' as road safety and training officer. Mr. Gahan, who is 52, served in the Metropolitan Police for 31 years, being a superintendent district traffic and transport officer before hisrecent retirement. He was for three years second-in-command of the Police Driving School, Hendon. His duties at Watney include advanced instruction of drivers, particularly of heavy goods .vehicles; instruction in driving 'maintenance; explanation of new legislation relating to road users, and examination of all applicants for employment as drivers.

Mr. Martin J. G. van der Spank has been appointed motor division sales executive for the Benelux countries by Rubery, Owen and Co. Ltd. Mr. van der Spank will be largely concerned with the marketing of trailer 'equipment.

Mr. L V. Andrews recently resigned his position with the Arlington Motor Co. Group as group fleet sales manager, after long service, and has joined Walter W. Saunders Ltd. as general manager, with prior interests in developing the commercial vehicle side.

After 35 years' service with Borg and Beck Co. Ltd., Mr. Harry Barker, having reached retiring age, has relinquished his position as sales manager; his services are being retained by the group in another capacity. Mr. Barker has been replaced as sales manager by Mr. J. St. H. Webb.

The University of Glasgow has conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on Mr. Charles A. Hepburn, chairman of Adrolic Engineering Co. Ltd.

Mr. William J. P. Melvin, Northern Scotland district manager of British Road Services Ltd., retired this week. An Aberdeenshire man, Mr. Melvin was one of the pioneers in long-distance haulage. He introduced the first regular road haulage service between Aberdeen and Glasgow in 1923, the vehicles used including steam wagons and chain-drive, solid-tyred ex W.D. Albions. In 1929 he was appointed to the board of Universal Transport (Scotland) Ltd. and in 1934 he resigned to devote his whole time to road haulage development. When Universal Transport was nationalized in 1949, he joined B.R.S. at Aberdeen as district traffic superintendent. Mr. Melvin was a founder member of the LongDistance Road Haulage Association, and is an active member of its successor, the Road Haulage Association.

Memorial Service A MEMORIAL service for Mr. Roland .1-1. E. Dangerfield, former chairman of Temple Press Ltd., who died on June 19, will be held on Friday, July 24, at 12.15 p.m., in the Church of St. Bride, Fleet Street, London.

Obituary

WE regret to record the death of Mr. H. Morrison.

Mr. Morrison, who died last month at the age of 53, was the senior technical service representative of Stacatruc Ltd., of Birmingham. In 1926 Mr. Morrison joined the family business of A. E. Morrison and Sons, manufacturing electric road vehicles, who are now known as Austin, Crompton Parkinson Electric Vehicles Ltd., of South Wigston, Leicester.
