Details of an Austrian Machine with a Very Low Power-weight Ratio.

MANY "VISITORS to the Royal Show must have been struck by the workmanlike appearance of a new industrial truck or luggage trolley, of Austrian manufacture, for loads of 30 cwt., marketed in this country by British Austro Daimler, Ltd., 112, Great Portland Street., London, W.1.

The most interesting feature of this vehicle is its remarkable power-weight ratio, the engine being of the twocylinder, air-cooled type with a bore and stroke of 70 mm. and 100 mm. respectively, and rated at 4.2 h.p. It is said that on level ground this truck will carry and tow a load of 61 tons, inclusive of the weight of the trucks.

The engine, clutch, transmission, and change-speed gear . form a very neat unit. Carburation is attended to by a Zenith instrument, and there is Bosch magneto with fixed ignition. The oil is circulated under pressure, and there is a leather cone clutch. The changes of speed are effected by sliding gears giving two speeds both forward and reveise.

From the gearbox the transmission is by roller chain to the rear axle, which, incidentally, is immediately under the driver's platform, as the driver sits facing the body of the truck, but the controls are so arranged that the truck can be driven with almost equal facility in either direction-a great convenience. Steering is effected through the front wheels by a long connecting link operated by a hand wheel mounted on a vertical column.

The wheels are of cast steel running on phosphor-bronze plain bearings. They are fitted -with "solid rubber tyres of 500 mm. by 90 mm.

Only one brake is provided. This acts on the rear axle and is operated by a lever.

The frame is built of rolled-steel channels mounted on the axles through the medium of coil springs.

The height of the platform from the ground is 1 ft. og ins., and the weight, empty, 14-k cwt. The overall width is 4 ft. 7 ins. and the length 8 ft. 8 ins.,

whilst the turning radius is 9 ft. 2 ins. The gear ratios give, on the first speed, 1.8 m.p.h., and on the second speed 4.35 m.p.h., and it is claimed that the petrol consumption is approximately.. .37 gallons per how, and the oil coo. sumption .37 pints per hour.
