Local Authorities Consider the Question of Time-tables.

I N ALL directions in Nottinghamshire there has been evidence of late of marked developments of motorbus traffic, largely in mining areas of which the county is to a great ektent made up.

Coincidently with this growth endeavours are being made by many local authorities to arrange time-tables, which, whilst affording a maximum of convenience to the public, are designed to put a stop to rush tactics upon the highways resulting from the keen competition now obtaining between rival concerns. The necessity; has become particularly Manifest in districts contiguous to Nottingham itself, one of the examples being in relation to the expanding volume of bus traffic between -Hucknall Torkard and Bulwell, both important colliery centres, the latter place falling within the jurisdiction of the municipal authorities, who, through the police, have instituted schedules;as to times of running. It has also been suggested that the Hucknall District Council should take similar action to avoid overlapping, and this idea has met with acceptance, the council having gone to the extent of intimating that unless rigid regardise paid to official regulations it may iustitute bus service of its own.

Stand Friction.

There has been some friction at Wigan regarding the use of local taxicab stands. In the first place, an owner-driver complained t6 the watch committee that a' local firm of owners were placing six or seven taxis in the front of the line with only one man in charge; thus, the ownerdrivers were only getting one chance of a fare to their seven on a, stand where 37 taxis were licensed. The same tiouble arose at another stand, owing to a coach owner leaving two coaches on a stand from six o'clock in the morning in charge of a boy.

The town clerk told the watch committee that the corporation's hackney carriage regulations had not been revised since 1880, and, as conditions had altered considerably during the intervening years, it was high time that they were revised.

It was decided that the sub-committee should. deal with the matter, of public stands, and that in future all persons desiring to drive motor vehicles plying for hire must pass a test to be conducted by the police before a licence be issued.
