Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Dished Steel Roller Centres, Cast Steel Front Forks, and Compound Piston Engines the Leading Features.

BRIEF PARTICULARS of the Arm strong-Whitworth steam-propelled road rollers were contained in our last issue, 'hut as these -machines embody several interesting and unusual features they are worthy of special mention.

Theme are three sizes, weighing 8 tons; 10 tons, and 12 tons respectively. The one seen last week at the Royal Show was the 10-tormer, and we will, therefore, describe this, although, as a matter of fact, the other two are practically identical, except with regard to their Size.

The boiler utilized is of the standard .loco. type, with a Belpaire fire-box and built to stand a working pressure of 180 lb. per sq. in. The fire-box is constructed of steel plates and has stays in the sides and crown. The barrel is 2 ft. diameter inside and is carried forward to form , the smoke-box. The joints are lapped and double-riveted, and a manhole is provided at the near side. The cylinders are carried on a steel plate riveted to the top of the barrel and forming a steam dome. The usual manholes and doors are provided in the fire-box. Both the boiler and the. fire-box top are lagged with asbestos held in position by steel. sheets. , Piston valve gearing is employed for the two-cylinder compound engine, steam being admitted through the centres of the pistons." A notable feature is that renewable liners are provided both for the cylinders and steam chest.

Lubrication is attended to by a mechanical lubricator driven from the valve gearing.

Ramstottotn rings are provided both for the pistons and the piston valves. The gear is. of the Stephenson link type, and the cross-heads are cast steel with renewable cast iron slippers working in circular guides of the same material,

The power from the crankshaft to the driving axle is conveyed by means of cast steel gearwheels, and eliding gears

on the crankshaft and the first countershaft permit the employment of two speeds. These gears are operated by

levers from the foot plate. Incidentally, all the pinions are machine cut. The bronze bearings for the crankshaft and the two countershafts are carried by cast tsteel brackets bolted to the side plates of the fire-box. Special arrangements have been provided to. permit the alignment of the different parts independently.

The main axle is carried in bronze bushes mounted in cast steel brackets. These brackets fit accurately into holes bored in the fire-box side plates and are there secured by fitted bolts. Siphon lubricators are provided.

Now, we come to some very important features of the design. These are the use of cast steel for the front fork, and dished steel plates for the rollers in, lieu of the more -usual spokes. In the ease of the front roller—or, rather, the two front rollers—each is built up with two of these plates forming a centre, both the inner and outer edges of the plates be-mg machined accurately to fit the hubs and the rims, which are turned and bored respectively for them. This is important as, by this means, the load, instead .of being taken through the bolts, is transmitted directly to the rims. In the case of the rear rollers only one dished plate is employed, but this is built into the rim and hub with the

same degree of accuracy. All the hub bearings are provided with screw-down greasers.

The mounting for the front fork, or the saddle head as it is sometimes called, is almost square. To it is attached the elfmney, and by providing .a lid it has been turned into a useful toolbox.

The following are some useful dimensions of the 10-ton, type :Wheelbase 11 ft. oi ins., width rolled 5 ft. 6 ins., overall length 18 ft. 9 ins., overall width 6 ft. 61ins., driving rollers 5 ft. 3 ins, diameter by 1 ft. 4 ins, wide, front rollers each 3 ft. 9 ins, diameter by 2 ft. 1 in. wide.
