Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Commercial vehicle registrations rose by 2.6% in December 2001 contributing to the best annual performance since 1989, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Truck registrations totalled 55,573 for 2001, compared with 54.180 in 2000. The annual total has been climbing from a 1992 low of about 31,000.

Fears that the economic slowdown might hit demand proved unfounded, with the lighter end of the two-axle rigid market performing particularly well. An SMMT spokesman says: "The result is very encouraging, coming despite current economic uncertainties."

Demand for heavy vans was particularly strong, with 4,766 registrations of two-axle rigids under 7.4 tonnes (up 31.1%). Total demand for two-axle rigids was 30,262 (up 4.1%).

In the truck sector Mercedes-Benz posted the greatest monthly rise in registrations, with 807 in December 2001, compared with 491 in December 2000. Oaf also enjoyed a big year-on-year rise, from 553 to 810.
