Mr. V. W. Pilkington, until last February technical director of Leyland Motors Ltd., has retired from the company after 38 years' service. In 1927 Mr. Pilkington was appointed assistant chief engineer and in 1932 he was made manager of the engineering department, becoming chief engineer four years later. He was seconded to the Ministry of Supply from 1941 to 1943, as deputy director in the department of tank design, and in 1945 he was appointed Leyland director of engineering. Following a short period with Dennis Bros. Ltd., Guildford, he rejoined Leyland in 1952 and in 1953 was made general manager (engineering and education), becoming chief engineer of the company the following year and technical director in 1956.

Mr. G. W. Keenlyside has been appointed engineering and administrative director of Comreps Ltd., of Grimsby, a company recently established as the central organization for the repair and maintenance of the Ross Group's transport fleet. Mr. Keenlyside, at 57, has had 42 years in heavy automotive engineering, including 14 years in charge of maintenance, repairs and vehicle building for the Darlington Triumph bus and coach operators and bodybuilders, and three years as assistant district engineer to the Road Haulage Executive. He joined the Ross Group in 1953.

Mr. E. A. Betteley has retired from the board of Tarmac Roadstone Ltd. and from his position of general transport manager. Mr. Betteley served 41 years with the Tarmac group and was a director of Tarmac Roadstone Ltd. since its formation in January, 1958. He will continue his connection with the group by representing it on the Traders Road Transport Association and the Traffic Conference Association.

Because of health reasons Maj. R. M. Cole has relinquished his office as managing director and also resigned from the board of Metropolitan-CammellWeymann Ltd. Mr. H. A. Cook, who has been acting managing director since last September, has been appointed managing director.

Mr. B. Woodward, formerly a sales engineer with Dennis Bros. Ltd., Guildford, is now development engineer for Johnston Bros. (Engineering) Ltd., of Dorking, Surrey. Mr. D. G. Walford has been appointed chief inspector of the Perkins Group's U.K. Operating Unit in succession to Mr. N. Etches, who has retired after 23 years with the company. Mr. Walford is now responsible for all inspection staff in diesel production departments at Peterborough and has a staff responsibility for inspection functions at the group's new Spennymoor plant, now under construction. He joined F. Perkins Ltd. in 1948 and was senior development engineer for the company from 1957 until last year.

Mr. F. Brooks has been appointed chief designer and assistant to Mr. E. Sherratt, technical director, of E.R.F. Ltd., of Sandbach, Cheshire. Mr. Brooks, 37, was formerly chief (contracts) engineer with L. Gardner and Sons, of Patricroft.

Mr. Robert Carlisle has been appointed traffic manager of the Ulster Transport Authority and will be responsible for all operating and commercial activities. Mr. Carlisle began his career in transport in 1927 with the former Belfast Omnibus Co., and joined the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board in 1935. He has held several posts with the U.T.A., including assistant traffic manager and public relations officer.

Mr. P. Phillipson, 67-year-old Goldthorpe (Yorks) coach proprietor, an active social worker for many years, was awarded the M.B.E. in the New Year Honours List.

Coinciding with the return from Bulgaria and Moscow of Mr. P. M. Yates, a director and general manager at Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., Preston, Mr. W. G. Allen and Mr. B. Francis Caunt, chairman and managing director respectively, left Southampton last week for South Africa. Mr. Caunt will spend two weeks visiting operators of Atkinson vehicles in the vicinity of Johannesburg, and will then fly on to Lisbon for talks with Portuguese road transport users.

Mr. W. E. Terry, operations manager of The Power Petroleum Co., retired on December 31, after more than 36 years with the company and its associates; he joined Power itself as depot inspector in 1934. After the war, during which he served with the Petroleum Board, he resumed duty with the operations staff of the Power Petroleum Co., first as distribution manager and then as operations manager in 1960. Mr. Terry and his wife are leaving for Australia later this month.

Mr. T. R. Hardman, a director of Tecalemit (Engineering) Ltd., is now in the U.S.A. to visit various companies throughout the States with whom Tecatemit have licensing arrangements, to discuss improvements to existing agreements and the introduction of new products and processes.

Mr. A. T. Kcvan Murray has relinquished his position as managing director of the Croft Bodybuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd., of Glasgow, to take up-a further appointment within the group, in Nottingham. Mr. W. Morrison, sales manager, and Mr. R. W. Murray, secretary. arc now directors of the company and Mr. W. Thomson has succeeded Mr. Morrison as general sales manager.

Mr. J. F. Higgins has been appointed assistant general manager. Coras lompair Eireann, in succession to Mr. D. Stewart. Mr. Higgins was formerly area manager, limerick.

NIr. S. P. Milburn has been appointed managing director of Raybestos-Belaco Ltd.. manufacturers of brake and clutch linings. He was previously sales director of Asbestos Cement Ltd., India.

Nir. W. E. -Dobson has been appointed automotive products supervisor at the head office of The Power Petroleum Co. He will now be concerned with the technical supervision of sales of all products in the automotive field. Previously Mr. Dobson was with the company's Midland division, where he was responsible for the sales of industrial lubricants. Before joining The Power Petroleum Co. in 1959 he specialized in the design and development of hydraulic transmission.

Sir Leslie Robinson has been appointed a director of The George Cohen 600 Group Ltd. Sir Leslie was Second Secretary of the Board of Trade from 1955 until his retirementfrom that • post in 1963.

Mr. E. W. Hardiman, director and general manager (marketing) of the Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd., has been appointed deputy co-ordinator of the world-wide marketing activities of the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) in New York. In order to take up this important post in the parent company of the group, Mr. Hardiman has resigned from the board or directors of Esso Petroleum. The post of general manager (marketing) will be taken over by Mr. K. C. Hunt, who was appointed to the board in 1962, and who previously had special responsibility for research and co-ordination.

Mr. D. McNicoll, chief engineer, and Mr. .1. H. Evans, chief metallurgist, have retired from British Timken, division of the Timken Roller Bearing Co. Mr. A. C. Dude, at present a managing director of Shell-Mcx and B.P. Ltd., has accepted an invitation from the committee of the Automobile Association to fill the newly created position of directorgeneral of the A.A. This office will come into being on July 1, when Mr. Dune's appointment will become effective, Lord Brentford has expressed the appreciation of the A.A. committee to the board of Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd. for releasing Mr. Dune. Mr. H. A. Evans and Mr. H. Cecil Orr continue as joint secretaries of the A.A.

Mr. A. V. Perry. chairman of Clayton Dewandre Holdings Ltd., has retired front this position and also front the board. Mr. Perry, who is 72, joined the board of the then Clayton Dewandre Co. in 1942 and became chairman in 1947. lie has been succeeded as chairman by Mr. L. W. Orchard, who was deputy chairman. Mr. Orchard is also a director of the Ever Ready Co. (Great Britain) Ltd, and the Ever Ready. Trust Co. Ltd.

Mr. J. L. Galloway has been appointed sales director of Cape Insulation and Asbestos Products Ltd. in succession to Mr. A. S. Runacres, who retired from the board on December 31 last.

Mr. L. I. Hickson has been appointed London representative for the Bulwark United Transport Group, a subsidiary of the United Transport Co. Ltd., of Chepstow. Mr. Hickson was .formerly sales representative' for Bulk Liquid Transport Ltd. He is now based at Berkeley Sq. House, London; W.I.

Mr. Alan Cooper, 34, has been appointed works director of J. C. Bamford (Excavators) Ltd., of Rocester. Staffs, manufacturers of JCB earthmoving equipment. Mr. Cooper joined the company in 1959 as production engineer and was promoted to works manager two and a half years ago.

Mr. G. W. Ward and Mr. R. B. Ward have been appointed to the board of directors of Tunney Cranes Ltd., of Eveshain, Worcs.

Mr. Elliot L. Ludvigsen has been appointed president of the Eaton Manufacturing Co., M. Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Mr. John C. Virden, whom he succeeds, will continue as chairman of the board and chief executive. Mr. Ludvigsen. who was previously a vice-president of Eaton, responsible for the truck and 'off-highway components group, is also a director of E.N.V. Engineering Co. lid.
