CONFLICTING statements appeared to l•-• be made from time to time about the shortage or otherwise of tippers in Scotland, the Scottish Licensing Authority. Mr. W. Quin, pointed out on Monday. He said he was satisfied, however, that King's and Co., Ltd., had experienced great difficulty in hiring tippers in Southern Scotland.

An application by an associated company, Craigengall Whinstone Quarries, Ltd., Glasgow, for an extension of their B licence conditions, was granted. The company wanted to carry goods throughout Scotland for King's, and road materials for Berwick County Council.

Mr. W. Law, for the applicants, said King's hiring amounted to £22,000 in 1955 and £38,000 in 1958. A £40m. road programme was in prospect for Scotland. and in addition to work on atomic stations and at Prestwick Airport, they had tendered for a substantial road project in Dumfriesshire.

The demand for tippers was increasing, and in many cases there was none avail able. The applicants, whose quarries were in Berwickshire, had seven tippers and one " flat " on a B licence. Although the two companies had common directors, the shareholding did not allow the carriage of King's goods on C licence.

CAPACITY FOR CRANKSHAFT PRODUCTION

THE precision engineering activities of the B.R.D. Co., Ltd., who have specialized in the production of blades for gas turbines, have been extended, and there is a large capacity for the quantity machining of crankshafts at their factory at Aldridge, Staffs.

As a result of the falling-off in demand in the aircraft industry, facilities are also available for the production of crankshafts, gearboxes and similar components. In association with Garringtons, Ltd., an affiliated concern, B.R.D. are also making the Carrington constant-velocity universal joint.

A DD1TIONAL trophies will be col-n/-1 peted for at this year's British Coach Rally in Brighton. Among the donors are W. S. Yeates, Ltd., and Sasserath Alfred and-Co.

The Yeates trophy will go to the highest placed Yeates-bodied vehicle in the eoncours d'elegancc. Sasserath Alfred are awarding theirs to the vehicle combining the most safety precautions in design and equipment for driver and passengers.

N.Z. CUTS IMPORTS

'T'HE British motor industry will suffer

a blow by New Zealand's decision to reduce by a quarter the former 1958 quota for the import of completely knocked-down vehicles. The quota for assembled vehicles has been reduced by half. New Zealand is one of Britain's best markets.
