Service Granted

IMPROVEMENTS to both road and rail I services connecting Nottingham and Derby may result in a general traffic increase, rather than a loss by one medium to the other. This was stated by the chairman of the East Midland Traffic Commissioners, Mr. A. G. Curtis, in a reserved decision granting two operators a new express service between the cities.

Barton Transport, Ltd., and the Trent Motor Traction Co., -Ltd., had sought permission to supplement their existing stage services, which took 57 minutes, by a non-stop service using the newly opened Borrowash by-pass.

Their application was opposed by British Railways, who said they proposed to institute a Diesel connection next April.

It was claimed that if the new service were granted, facilities would be in excess of requirements, and existing competition would be intensified.

Mr. Curtis said the Commissioners were satisfied that a non-stop service would prove a material convenience to the large number of passengers using Trent and Barton facilities, although there had been no substantial evidence of serious inconvenience. Without improvements to road services, the rail scheme might well result in an abstraction of traffic from road to rail.

But they wished to make it clear that the decision was not creating a precedent to be applied in future applications for express services to he superimposed on stage routes.
