They are seeking a 3d. fare for three stages and 4d. for -four stages, td yield £100,000 of the 1:105,000 needed to balance their finances.

The new structure would be: 2d. for the first4 rilile, 2,1d. for 1 mile, and Id. for each additional + mile up to a maximum fare of 6d. Children's fares would remain unchanged.

When the proposals were put before the city council on Monday night, ale Mrs. E. Williams suggested that the undertaking should be operated out of the rates. Chi-. S. P. Hill, chairman of the transport committee, replied that this had been investigated, hut it would cost a 14s. 6d. rate to run, without taking into account the purchase of new vehicles.

An exception to Nottingham's 6d. maximum fare was granted last week. when they were allowed to bring thejr fares structure for servicesbetween the city and West Bridgford into line with West Bridgford Urban District Council's scale. Mr, A. G. Mansfield, clerk to the urban council, told the East Midland Commissioners that when they increased fares in 1956 a surplus of £3,600 was expected. Instead, there was a deficit of £1,571, and in the current year a deficit of 0,787 was unavoidable.

The new structure, which will come into force on Sunday, is Up to 0.7 mile, 2d.; 1.8 miles, 40.; 2.5 miles, 50.; 3.3 miles, 60.; 4.2 miles, 7d.

HAULIERS APPEAL OVER GARAGE REFUSAL

OFthe 31 commercial vehicles owned by R. L. Williamson and Sons, Skipton, only 10 could he accommodated indoors at their premises in the town. This was stated at a Ministry of Housing inquiry, last week, when the company appealed against the local authority's refusal to allow them to build a new garage on land adjoining Carleton New Road.

Mr. J. P. Mewies said they were now the biggest general haulage and milk, concern in the district, but their need for fresh accommodation was acute. Skipton Urban District Council had claimed that there were alternative sites. but this was untrue. They had also stated that the land was required for educational purpoSes, hut industry came before a playing field for a primary school.

The appeal was opposed by Mr. H. E. Scott on behalf of 22 owners and occupiers of property in the district, and about 1,000 other 'inhabitants. Mr. F. Birch opposed it for the county council. Decision will be given later.
