Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

riROM Lewin Road Sweepers, Ltd.,,

comes news of an interesting test of a 10/20 C.R.C. Thornycroft dustbincollecting vehicle carried out at the end of November.

The nuniber of loaders was four, and the weights were certified on a corporation weighing machine; six streets were cleaned in fine but windy weather, the salvageable materials being placed in the open-top container, whilst bottles were recovered from the compressed refuse at the tip. The accompanying table gives the detailed results..

The test showed that the only full net load obtained weighed 4 tons 14 cwt. 0 qrs. 14 lb., which was compressed into 10 cubic yds., giving a compressed weight of 9.4 cwt. per

cubic yd. The following deductions have been made from this. Three hundred and forty standard 18-in. by 24-in, bins give a (bushel measurement) capacity of 44 cubic yds. Assuming that they are only 50 per cent. filled, the total is 22 cubic yds. This quantity was cOmpressed into 10 cubic yds. Again, • if the uncompressed refuse weighed, on the average, 4 cwt. to the cubic yd., this would mean that 23.5 cubic yds. were compressed into 10, a percentage compression of 117.

BUILD UP FUNDS FOR THE FIGHT AFTER THE WAR

DESPITE the disorganization caused by the war, the membership of the joint organization of, Commercial Motor Users Association .(Blackburn area) and the East Lancashire Road Transport Association was well main' tained during 1940. This fact emerges. from the 26th annual report of the Association, which covers outstanding activities during the past year. Much success has attended the efforts of the organization to help members, these including the requisition or hire of vehicles by the military authorities.

It is stressed that the need for a strong organization representative of road transport is essential, and emphasis is laid on the need for members to support the Association and to urge non-members to join, so that funds will be available for the fight 'which will undoubtedly come when the war ends.
