laura.hailstone@rbi.co.uk THE GOVERNMENT has received its strongest message yet about abandoning the April fuel duty rise as the FairFuelUK campaign took its ight to the Treasury steps on Tuesday morning.

Campaigners held a giant banner, created by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), outside the Treasury building, which depicted the high rate of duty the Chancellor levies on fuel.

Meanwhile, campaign leader Peter Carroll and motoring journalist Quentin Willson delivered a letter inside the Treasury addressed to Chancellor George Osborne.

The campaigners also lobbied MPs on Tuesday outside the Hous es of Parliament, at College Green. “Two weeks ago MPs got a letter from FairFuelUK setting out our campaign; this week they’re getting another letter telling them how much support we’re getting, and next week they’ll get another letter, and we’ll pull a truck up Whitehall, because the only way to get the message across is for our voice to be loud and focused,” says Carroll.

On 2 March the Fair FuelUK team will be handing the campaign petition (currently at 47,500 signatures) in to Downing Street.

Kate Gibbs, RHA head of communications, says: “Contemplation from the Chancellor over the April rise is not enough – we need to see decisive action. We are going to keep ighting over this, and by 2 March we need to be well over the 100,000 mark.” Jim Dodd, chairman of Dodds Transport, says: “I don’t understand any haulier who isn’t behind this campaign.” ● Sign the petition at FairFuelUK. com
