CM’s spies delve into the secret world of Euro-6

THESE ARE THE irst pictures of Volvo’s next generation FH, snapped by our spies while undergoing winter testing in the frozen north.

Although heavily disguised, it’s clear that this is an all-new truck – not just a facelift. The cab proile has changed, and the windscreen is less raked than before. This move is likely to prove popular with drivers, some of whom are critical of the lack of shoulder room while standing up in the current FH. It is safe to assume that this truck will also form the basis of the new Renault Magnum. But insiders say the Renault will have completely different body panels, enabling it to retain its individuality and distinctive Gallic lair. Both Volvo and Renault are tight-lipped as to when the trucks will be oficially launched, but the smart money is on next year. However, they are unlikely to actually go on sale until 2013.

In fact, 2012 looks set to be a signii

cant year for new vehicle launches, as every truck maker is forced to make major changes in advance of Euro-6 (which becomes mandatory on 31 December 2013). You can’t just drop a Euro-6 engine under a Euro-5 cab, because the cleaner engines require roughly 40% additional cooling.

To put this simply, radiators will need to be 40% larger. As a consequence, you can expect to see redesigned larger grilles (as shown on the new FH), and raised cabs.
