Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Light brigade leads the charge as UK commercial vehicle sales break all previous records. Colin Barnett reports on the winners and losers.

THE UK CAR market may he showing signs of a decline, but the same fate doesn't appear to afflict commercial vehicle sales, which are still rising in the SMMT's latest registrations charts.

Led largely by the van sector, the rolling 12-month figure to the end of January was the highest ever. The 391.070 registrations represented an increase of 7.6% on the previous corresponding period.

The figures for trucks showed only slight growth, although the monthon-month registrations of 7.5-12ton ne rigids and 4x2 tractors were up 30.9 and 23.8% respectively.

January winners and losers were clearly defined, with Paccar reinforcing its dominant position with more than 28% of all registrations above 3.5 tonnes. Iveco and both Swedish marques also recorded rises, at the expense of Renault and the two Germans.

In the buoyant van sector, the 1.8-3.5-tonne sector continues to drive the market with the rolling year up 14.1%. Ford is up 1% to just under 27% of the upto-3.5-tonne sector. But the biggest surprise, despite the mistake which left its figures out of our recent van market analysis. is Iveco.

In the all-important subsector for vans at the top 3.5-tonne rating, a 26% January rise allowed the Iveco Daily to sneak past the Mercedes Sprinter to take second place for the first time.

Iveco UK boss Chris Thomeycroft-Smith is keen to point out that these are "real" registrations, and this new position is more than a blip. With the Daily's strength in the chassis-cab market, especially for tippers and Luton vans, and the imminent arrival of the new highoutput engines and automated transmissions, he is confident Iveco can maintain its progress.

• Our analysis of the UK market up to 3.5 tonnes should have credited Iveco with a 8.4% share of the large van sector and 2.4% of the total market.
