By 1:? oy Dr Brown SOME 200 tanker drivers working on BP's contract to distribute fuel to Sainsbury's forecourts have called off their threat to strike after an agreement was reached over bargaining procedures.

The drivers who will transfer from the oil company's in-house transport operation to Turners (Soham) under a TUPE transfer agreement in mid-January will maintain their national bargaining structure along with a national agreement covering terms and conditions. This follows talks involving trade union Unite, fuel supplier Greenergy, and Turners.

Drivers on the contract were balloted last month by Unite on possible strike action over fears that the proposed move away from national negotiations may have forced them to accept lower wages, as well as weaken the union's ability to represent members.

Paul Day, managing director at Turners, says: "Turners has provided a commitment to work together with Unite to minimise. or avoid, job losses and ensure a seamless transfer for the employees.

"We are really optimistic towards this contract," he adds. "We've met with the national stewards and we were impressed with their attitude and commitment to delivering a professional and successful operation."
