French strike threat

FRENCH TRUCK DRIVERS are scheduled to strike from Sunday (13 Dec) after five workers' unions made the call for industrial action over a wage dispute with major retailers.

Unions, including ENTR, the French road haulage federation, say there is the potertal for up to 500,000 HGV drivers to strike from December 13 as they look for increased wages. No date to conclude the strike has been set.

The head of international affairs at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), Peter Cullum, tells CM: "We know negotiations are ongoing, and understand the dispute involves distribution workers for the supermarket chains Auchan and Carrefour."

The unions claim distribution workers have had a two-year pay freeze and accused bosses of using the recession as an excuse to treat staff badly.

At a press conference last week, union CGT said it was "going to put pressure on companies and products connected to Christmas".

French commerce minister Herve Novell l says industrial action would be "intolerable", while French transport minister Dominique Bussereau adds: "A strike must be avoided."

Bussereau was set to meet with employers and union representatives as CM went to press.
