/ Applications to open hundreds of quarries in England and Wales could lead to more work for recession-hit tipper operators.

A total of 652 applications have been made in the past year, since legislation forced owners of mineral rights to register quarrying permissions granted between 1943 and 1948.

But conservationists are calling on the Government to clamp down on new sites, claiming that few conditions were attached when these rights were granted and most of them do not meet modern environmental standards.

Kettering-based Starmin has plans to extract four million tonnes of limestone from a site near Corby.

Starmin director John Clarke says it is too early to say whether this project will provide any extra work for tippermen. "Hopefully we will get planning permission to mind the site but we are facing strong local objections," he says.
