titer Andy Scaife is researching a tome on the history of the Great North Road — the old Al — which ran from London to Edinburgh and was noted for landmarks such as Scotch Corner. Notable too were its numerous transport cafes and, in the days before speed restrictions, the use of its flat stretches by manufacturers for road testing new vehicles at top speed.
